Meet Jarryn, 1st Year University student
Jarryn Goldberg, who just finished his 1st Year of a Computer Science BSc at the University of Surrey, joined the Risk Development team for a week while on work experience. While he progressed, working on a representative API project, he was invited to learn more about our product and ways of working, with sessions from our Managed Service and Product teams to introduce the world of Fraud Detection and join our daily Agile ceremonies. He was embedded alongside the development teams for the week, gaining useful exposure to the day-to-day in a software team. Alongside this, he also joined sessions on how agentic development practices within our development teams are a continuously growing capability delivering real engineering impact.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m South African and moved to the UK when I was 17, so it's been quite a transition to go from a kid in your home country to an adult in a different country. It’s definitely been a unique experience and has helped me grow as a person. Career-wise, I’m still exploring my options. I know I'd like to work within the tech sector, but there are so many different areas that I'm not sure what I want to specialise in yet. Right now, I'm focused on learning as much as I can, gaining experience and figuring out which path will be the best fit for me.
What interested you in doing work experience at The ai Corporation?
The opportunity to gain a better understanding of the professional world and explore the different specialists and the areas they specialise in. It was also a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience, develop new skills, learn from people already in the industry and use it as a networking opportunity.What have you done during your week with ai, and what have you enjoyed the most?
Worked on a small API Project that received transactions, scored them based on several risk rules of fraud and then returned a decision of the transaction being approved, needing review or being declined. I also attended meetings with many people from different departments, allowing me to gain valuable insight into how everything works behind the scenes at ai and the number of teams it takes to function at this scale.
What have you learned that you will take back to your educational life?
Embrace Artificial Intelligence. Learn to use it efficiently; it's a skill that companies and recruiters will be looking for and, in a few years, could be the deciding factor in your success in interviews and at companies.
